HLTH 8501 Week 6 Discussion: Why Employment Laws Are Important in Healthcare: Impact and Consequences
Less than a century ago it was not uncommon to have children working in factories, long workdays and weeks, and unfair wages. During the past 50 years, employment laws have been enacted to protect workers from discrimination, unfair termination, and disparity in wages. In the healthcare field, leaders and managers must know these laws and how they impact the management of a diverse workforce and assess and manage the legal, ethical, and financial risks associated with not complying with these laws.
In this Discussion, you will analyze a case study to understand the labor laws at issue and investigate how well management complied with those laws, as well as what could have been improved on.

This case revolves around the termination of employees potentially in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public (U.S. Department of Justice, 2020). Dr. Jones reviewed the termination files of her department and noted four terminations that raised concerns: Charlie, who was terminated after the company discovered he was an alcoholic; Jennifer, who was terminated after it was discovered she had a history of cancer; Jose, who was terminated after being diagnosed with epilepsy; and Conner, who was terminated after being seen at a Gay Pride March. Bruce, who had a compulsive gambling problem, was also terminated (Walden University, 2023)….
