HLTH 8501 Week 4 Discussion: Compensation and Benefits

When designing compensation and benefits programs, organizational leaders have begun to recognize that they must consider the unique needs of their employees based on workforce demands and geographic factors. This has resulted in many innovative approaches to compensation and benefits management. Although what works for one organization may not work for another, organizations might find it helpful to revise and build upon existing programs from inside and/or outside the healthcare industry.

As with all things innovative, healthcare administrators should exercise caution as well. Some programs may have good intentions, but they can lead to unanticipated negative results. For example, consider the benefit of “unlimited time off.” For some organizations, a policy such as this might be a perfect fit. However, this may not always be the case. Employees may view this as an excellent benefit and choose an employer based on it. But they might then find out the company’s culture discourages anyone from actually taking time off. Employers also run the risk of a significant percentage of employees abusing the policy. For some organizations, a traditional policy (with a set number of weeks) may empower employees to take their time off guilt-free and help employers better estimate their workforce needs.

For this Discussion, you examine a benefits program and provide recommendations for improvement.

Resources

Be sure to review the Learning Resources before completing this activity.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Locate an example of an innovative compensation or benefits program from within or outside the healthcare industry. Then, consider the following:
    • How would you describe the innovative benefit? Why, in your opinion, is the program effective? Consider the program features, its intended outcomes, and how those outcomes are met. Are there any downsides or unintended consequences of the program that could create issues for the employer and/or employees?
    • How might you improve on the program? Would you take steps to incorporate more innovative solutions, or would you scale the program back to more traditional benefits and compensation offerings?
    • How might you apply this program to your current or future healthcare organization?

By Wednesday

Post your analysis of and proposed recommendations for compensation and benefits programs to include the following:

  • Briefly describe the compensation or benefits program you selected.
  • Analyze the program. Include why it is innovative and effective. Also include whether there are any potential issues presented by the program.
  • Propose at least two recommendations to improve the program.
  • Propose how you would apply the program to your current healthcare organization or one you might work at in the future.

Support your response by identifying and explaining key points and/or examples presented in the Learning Resources.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings. Consider how your colleagues’ postings relate to the information presented in the Learning Resources and to your own posting.

Refer to the Week 4 Discussion Rubric for specific grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use this grading rubric to assess your work.

By Friday

Respond to at least two of your colleagues’ postings in one or more of the following ways:

  • Expand on this Discussion by highlighting differences between your own posting and your colleagues’ postings.
  • Provide additional insights or alternative perspectives.
  • Propose an additional recommendation to improve the program that your colleague selected.
  • Propose an additional way to apply the program to a current or future healthcare organization.
