DDHA 8011 Module 5 Discussion: Finding Success in the DHA Program

Imagine that you are standing at the bottom of a large mountain preparing to scale it to the summit. To be successful, you need to make sure that you have the requisite ropes, harnesses, carabiners, and belaying devices. In addition, you need to consider apparel and equipment for your body like shoes, helmets, and clothing. Having all the tools in place is only half of the preparation though. Mental and physical preparation need to also be completed; otherwise, what might be an exciting and invigorating experience could turn disastrous.

So it also is with the commencement of your doctoral journey. Walden provides a vast assortment of tools and resources, and you may have also prepared yourself with equipment and supplies, but the importance of preparation cannot be overstated. Completing a doctoral degree can be mentally and physically taxing. Time normally spent relaxing with friends and family will now need to be allocated to coursework. The rigor of researching and writing can push even the most studious student to a point of enormous stress but planning out time and resources ahead of time can lessen some of the impact.

In this Discussion, you will begin to anticipate the challenges that you will encounter as a doctoral student. You will also explore the expectations for the program and the residency requirements in particular.

One element of the Doctor of Healthcare Administration (DHA) program at Walden University that I anticipate being particularly challenging is the data analysis component. My background has predominantly been in qualitative research and administrative roles, which involved a significant amount of policy analysis, strategic planning, and program management. However, the rigorous statistical analysis required in healthcare administration, especially in the context of evidence-based decision-making, poses a steep learning curve for me.
