DDHA 8011 Module 3: Networking Board: Elevator Pitch

“It’s not what you know; it’s who you know.” Depending on where you are in your professional career, you may have heard this cliché saying more than once. More and more, making professional connections increases a candidate’s chances of landing a job in their field. Networking with a variety of professionals early on in your career and practicing this skill often could turn out to be critical to your career growth.

In this Networking Board, you will be asked to interact with your colleagues on a professional level, and this board will carry throughout the DHA program. The ultimate goal of this Networking Board is to make connections that you can take with you through the program and into your post-doctoral career.

In this first Networking Board for this course and for the program, consider who you are as a professional and where you aspire to be, and create a short elevator pitch that explains this. An elevator pitch should be 60 seconds or less and should summarize your current employer and position, why you and/or your company is special, your goals, and what results you have achieved.

You may choose to type out your elevator pitch or use Capture Space/Kaltura to verbally articulate your pitch.

To prepare for this Networking Board:

  • Consider where you currently are in your career and how you might describe this succinctly to someone who is unfamiliar with the field.

By Thursday of Week 7

Submit your written or recorded elevator pitch.

By Sunday of Week 7

Respond to at least 2 colleagues by offering suggestions for improving their elevator pitch.
