DDHA 8011 Module 2 Assignment: Academic Integrity
The issue of academic integrity is not limited to institutions of higher education. It can be found within the fields of research, peer-reviewed articles, newspapers, social media, and anywhere written words are used to express ideas. If it is so prevalent, why is it a big deal? How often have authors been misquoted or not been given credit for their work that is displayed on plaques, on wall art, and in motivational presentations? Does it only become an issue when someone uses another person’s words in published writing, like a research paper or in a peer-reviewed article? What about publicly accessible data? How often have data been misrepresented, falsified, or fabricated to meet the needs of an organization?
Spencer Johnson, an American writer and physician, wrote: “Integrity is telling myself the truth. And honesty is telling the truth to other people” (Johnson, 1998, p. 46). Are the two really that different? Johnson’s quote seems to imply as much. What does this have to do with academic integrity, academic dishonesty, and your doctoral program?
Spend a few minutes searching the internet for “academic integrity,” and the results will likely be hundreds of links to educational institutions and their policies on academic integrity. Walden University addresses the issue in the Code of Conduct section of the Student Handbook. In addition to plagiarism, providing false information, reusing previously published material for other courses, violating copyright laws, and stealing other intellectual property are academic integrity violations (Walden University, n.d.).
As a practitioner-scholar, it is vital to understand the concept of academic integrity. In addition to adhering to the standards while completing your doctoral program, it is equally vital to do so in your professional practice as well. Healthcare administration professionals work to improve the delivery of healthcare services, and many times these advancements occur as a result of evidence-based research and interventions. Just as “Integrity in science is of utmost importance in advancing knowledge” (Bonn et al., 2017), it is “only when academic integrity is respected can research findings be sound and accurate and permit scientific advancements” (Bonn et al., 2017).
In this Assignment, you will complete an academic integrity tutorial to explore what academic integrity means for your doctoral program at Walden University. In addition, you will submit evidence of your completion of the tutorial.
