HLTH 8501 Week 3 Discussion: Optimal Team Performance

WAL_MMHA_Relations Badge.pngThis Discussion aligns to the NCHL domain of Relations. Specifically, it focuses on the third level of the Team Leadership competency: “Promotes Team Effectiveness.” For more information on how this icon aligns to the NCHL Health Leadership Competency Model 3.0, refer to the MHA Iconography page.

To successfully provide health care, organizations rely on their employees to work collaboratively in teams. In this Discussion, you will introduce a new project for your team. Effective communication should clearly state the project and purpose, the time frame, and the plan to complete the project as a team.

In this Discussion, you will return to the strategies you developed in the Week 2 Discussion and work with a team to develop a “communication piece” that would address the perspectives of multiple teams involved in the scenario. You will work with a team of your own, incorporate their feedback, and discuss your experience as being part of this team.

The company-wide “communication piece” will announce the strategy to the various individuals and teams in the case study. You will aim to ensure that everyone involved feels valued and that their needs are addressed in this communication. Your “communication piece” should be brief, and, therefore, it should not address every conceivable concern or provide detailed solutions. Ideally, everyone in the scenario should at least feel that they and their concerns are acknowledged.

Resources

Be sure to review the Learning Resources before completing this activity.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Refer to the Week 2 Discussion and its assigned case study. Specifically, return to a strategy for motivating employees and creating positive outcomes that you recommended to a leader in the scenario.
  • Draft your “communication piece”:
    • Using the strategy that you proposed in Week 2, brainstorm some ideas and write an outline or rough draft of your “communication piece.” Additionally, identify the individuals and/or teams from the scenario to whom you would need to address through the communication.
  • Work with a team:
    • By Tuesday, form or join a team of at least two people to help you refine your strategy.
      • You can choose your colleagues to be part of the team, and there is an Optional Discussion this week that provides an area for you to form a team and coordinate a time to work together. If you prefer to collaborate with your team in the online classroom, there is a groups area available that you can use. You can request access to a group from your Instructor. Be sure to provide the names of everyone in your team. Your Instructor can then enroll your team into a group.
      • Optionally: You may also choose to work with two people outside of the classroom (e.g., coworkers, family, friends) to receive feedback. If you choose this option, be sure to account for extra time that may be involved for those individuals to familiarize themselves with the scenario and the Week 2 Discussion prompts.
    • Provide your draft “communication piece” to your team.
    • Seek your team’s feedback on whether you addressed all of the individuals in the scenario and if there is anything you should include or remove from your “communication piece.” How would they feel if they were to receive this announcement?
    • Make note of your experience working with your team.
  • Incorporate the feedback you received and finalize your “communication piece.”

By Thursday

Post your evaluation of team-building principles. Be sure to include the following:

  • Include the final version of your proposed “communication piece.”
  • Rate your experience working with a team to revise your “communication piece.”
    • Did you gain any additional insights from your team based on their feedback?
    • How might you relate this experience to a real-world situation and put it into practice? (Or, if you have already, how did this experience compare?)
    • Did working with a team make an impact on how you considered diversity, equity, and inclusion in your “communication piece”?
    • What is at least one benefit of working with a team?

Support your response by identifying and explaining key points and/or examples presented in the Learning Resources.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings. Consider how your colleagues’ postings relate to the information presented in the Learning Resources and to your own posting.

Refer to the Week 3 Discussion Rubric for specific grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use this grading rubric to assess your work.

By Saturday

Respond to at least two of your colleagues’ postings in one or more of the following ways:

  • Provide your perspective on whether your colleague addressed everyone in the scenario with their “communication piece.”
  • Suggest something to add or remove from your colleague’s “communication piece” to ensure that everyone in the scenario feels acknowledged, valued, and has their needs addressed.
  • Ask a question about their experience working with a team for this Discussion.
  • Expand on this Discussion by highlighting differences between your own posting and your colleagues’ postings.

Continue the Discussion through Sunday.

SOLUTION HLTH 8501 Week 3 Discussion: Optimal Team Performance

Hello Class,

Evaluation of Team-Building Principles

Experience Working with the Team:

Working with a team to revise the communication piece was a highly beneficial experience. Collaborative efforts brought diverse perspectives and enriched the final output, ensuring it was well-rounded and considerate of various viewpoints. The team’s input was invaluable in fine-tuning the language, structure, and inclusivity of the message. By leveraging the collective intelligence of the group, we were able to create a communication piece that resonates with a broader audience and addresses potential concerns effectively (Salas et al., 2020)….
